Great visit for my foreign students to see old vintage country life of UK mixed with Irish traditions and get it explained in an easy simplified tour!!
this is a nice estate to visit. the family is still involved and owns everything inside. they've really kept the feel of the original house. viewing the house is only available through a guided tour, but it's definitely worth it.
A neo-classical mansion that cost 30 to 50 million pounds in today's money can't fail to impress. Solid and imposing, unsoftened by gardens, soaring ceilings and negative spaces, the house keeps you on guard. I was impressed by how spacious and well-lit even the servant's domain was, how carefully designed for unseen ingress and egress. I could have peppered the guide with questions all afternoon, but limited myself to the transitions in stairwells. This property was one of those which informed my decision to become a member of the National Trust.
I enjoyed looking round here and hearing about the history but actually I found the stories about the trust's restoration work even more interesting. The fact that the family still owns the contents and move them about and change them was cool. The tunnel for delivers. People who designs these buildings I salute you.
Nice wee walk, don't be expecting to see any of the lake on the lake walk though it's just a path round the lake covered on either side with wild hedges. The house isn't worth the money as the guide didn't seem to know what she was talking about and kept saying things like "it was Lord so and so" and then saying oh maybe it isn't him at all and her dates where hundreds of years apart. Been on far better free walks!
